FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) about LED TVs

Here are some frequently asked questions about LED TVS:

  • What is the difference between LCD TVs and LED TVs?

LCD TV is also known as Liquid Crystal Display TV. From its name, it uses liquid crystal to produce images on the TV screen. Its thin layer of liquid crystal has tiny cells that produce pixels. As an electric current is applied, its rod shaped molecules respond by bending the light. LCD TVs are quite inefficient in terms of power utilization because the enormous mass of light that is being produced behind the screen is blocked before it reaches the person who is watching the television.

LED TVs also known as Light Emitting Diode on the other hand use backlighting technology with the use of LED. Its screen contains blue, red and green LEDs which lights up to produce the correct color. It has two types of backlighting technology: Edge Lighting and Full Array. Its backlighting technology makes it possible to consume 40% less power making it eco friendly.

  • What is the difference of Edge lighting technology from Full Array technology

In Edge lighting technology, a chain or sequence of LED backlights are placed along the external edges of the screen. Light then spreads across the screen. Through this method, televisions can be made very slim. However, black levels are not that deep and the edge area of the screen has a propensity to be brighter than the center area.

Full Array Technology uses several layers of LED and puts it at the back of the entire surface of the screen. Local dimming is possible in this type of backlighting technology. This just means that a LED can be turned on and off alone within the areas of the screen. And so, you can have more controls on the TV’s brightness and darkness. While TVs with edge lighting technology are slim, TVs with Full array are thick.

  • How is internet possible in LED TVs?

All you need is just a home broadband connection. The TV will then wirelessly connect to the internet via your network. Now you can watch videos on youtube, you can experience online video streaming and a lot more with the widgets available on the LED TV.

  • What do you mean by Network Connectivity with regards to LED TVs?

This just simply means that you can have access to your personal computer with the use of your LED TV. This allows you to view pictures and videos in a bigger screen. This network connectivity works through its Ethernet cable or wireless router. Connection to the home network is an easy set up and once you’re done, you can already have access to you photos, music and videos from PC or laptop.

  • What makes LED TVs eco friendly?

LED TVs helps consumers by using 40% less energy than regular LCD TVs. When the TV is in a standby mode, it reduces the energy consumed to 1/10 of a watt. These TVs are also mercury free. We all know that mercury is very harmful to us human and to our environment. Low amounts of mercury can already cause brain and kidney damage.

  • What is this contrast ratio all about? How does it affect the picture quality of LED TVs?

Contrast ratio is a measure of a display system. It is the ratio of luminance of the brightest color which is white to the darkest color which is black that LED TVs are capable of producing. You want to have a high contrast ratio for your TV because the higher the number, the better the image it gives during dark scenes.

  • What’s with this 1080p resolution manufacturers are talking about?

1080p is a shorthand name for category of HDTV video modes. The number 1080 represents lines of vertical resolution or 1080 horizontal scan lines. The letter “p” stands for progressive scan which means the image is not interlaced. 1080p can be referred to as full HD or full high definition. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080p)
